Unfortunately, many of us have run into situations where a SIEM solution was purchased and the deployment has stalled out. Either the original purchase was not your decision, or the sales teams highlighted the strengths and capabilities, without fully disclosing the complexity of getting those features fully operational. Regardless of how you got here, you’re now stuck, and you don’t have the time and resources to get the full benefit of the SIEM.
There are two directions you can go from here:
1. Live with a partially deployed SIEM until the investment is depreciated.
2. Get implementation help from a third party.
Both of these options deliver a new set of problems. The first option increases your risk and exposure. The second option can be expensive and a SIEM is not a “set and forget” technology.
An alternative is to look for a nimble service provider that is willing to co-manage the SIEM with you. This will allow you to get the full value of your initial investment and get the additional support you need.
You may have originally avoided an outsourced solution because you didn’t feel it was a fit for your organization, so it’s important to find the right partner now. You need to find a cybersecurity partner that is willing to be an extension of your team. They should ideally build a “rules and responsibilities” document that outlines how you will work together in a cohesive manner. This allows proper expectations and limitations to be set up front.
